DIY: Donut Disturb Beach Hat

April 13, 2016

I seriously fell for Eugenia Kim’s sun hats last summer {I mean seriously how cute?!}, but since I still have not won the lottery, spending $455 on a beach hat is just not happening. Luckily, a few weeks ago, I came across this tutorial on Glitter Guide and decided to try my hand at making a sequin sun hat.

I ended up doing one a little different and wanted to share the process with you.  There are all kinds of fun phrases you can put on your hat from, “out of office,” “off duty,” “Mrs. {Insert New Last Name Here},” or “vitamin sea.” I decided to go with “do not disturb,” but decided to incorporate my love of donuts {#priorities.}

So here’s what you need:

  • straw sun hat {I picked mine up at Charlotte Russe, but here are some different inexpensive options for you: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
  • single strand sequin ribbon {I’d recommend using a bold color! I bought a 4 yard roll and had more than enough}
  • donut sequin appliqué {I thought for sure I’d be able to find this at Michael’s, Hobby Lobby or JoAnn’s, but didn’t find one on any of their sites. Luckily, I found this one for less than $5}
  • pencil
  • high temperature hot glue gun

It cost me a little over $20 for all my supplies: my hat was $15, the donut appliqué was $4 and after pulling up my Hobby Lobby coupon the sequin ribbon was just $1.79 {with enough ribbon for another hat!}.

Start by sketching out what you want on your hat brim.  It was pretty hard to get this visible so don’t be afraid to really press down and go back over if you need to.   If your hat has any adornments, keep these in mind in terms of placement. For example, I knew I wanted the little crochet bow to be centered in the back.

After you’ve sketched it all out go ahead and make sure you’re happy with how it looks. I used this time to adjust spacing + adjust letter sizing to my heart’s desire.  I used my donut appliqué instead of an ‘O’ so I made sure that the lettering was similar in size.  DIY Donut Disturb Beach Hat

{Please excuse my mom’s janky glue gun…}

Following your sketch, apply hot glue and attach sequin ribbon.  Be careful, otherwise you will burn the life out of your hand like I did.  Be patient and do small sections.

You can cut ribbon where needed, but don’t be afraid to go back over the top of the ribbon either.  For the donut, I put glue around the edge and then placed it over the ends of my ‘d’ and ‘n.’  DIY Donut Disturb Beach Hat

After you’ve glued everything down, give it time to take hold and then go back and clean up any glue webs and erase any pencil marks that may be showing.  After that you’re done — get ready to wear your fab hat to the beach + pool and get tons of compliments!

Not feeling crafty?  Here are some handmade straw hats for a fraction of the price of the Eugenia Kim ones:

New Warby Parker Sunglasses! #SeeSummerBetter

April 12, 2016

I’m super excited to pop in today to share some exciting news; Warby Parker just launched their new summer collection of sunglasses today!  There are brand new frames, new colors to snag them in as well as a few timeless fan favorites that have returned to the starting lineup.New Warby Parker Sunglasses! #SeeSummerBetter

Warby Parker truly captured the spirit of summer with this collection and drew inspiration from brain freezes, that sand that just seems to keep appearing in your bag, barbecues, long days at the pool, beach hair and summer picnics.  Sunglasses are a must have accessory when taking in everything summer has to offer and the new collection offers a frame for every style.  The new Crystal and Grapefruit Soda color options present a very mod, futuristic vibe; Belize Blue gives a strong and bold punch to your frames and while the color clearly has a masculine influence, it still is a shade that can be worn by anyone.

My personal favorite new hue, Sand Castle, is a tortoise that mimics wood, giving a very neutral look to your sunglasses {you can wear them with anything!} while still being super unique and eye-catching.

Are you near a Warby Parker store? You may want to stop by on an upcoming Friday as they are doing all sorts of fun things like live performances from local bands, lemonade stands, custom lens cloths and more.

All of the lenses come with polarization, are UV protected, {bonus, if you’re like me and find yourself dropping your shades in your beach bag throughout the summer} scratch resistant AND probably the coolest thing about them — every time you purchase a pair of frames a pair is donated to someone in need.

Frames start at just $95. Which pair do you love? New Warby Parker Sunglasses! #SeeSummerBetter

Thank you to Warby Parker for partnering with me on this post.  I love being able to work with brands to create fresh, new content for What Nicole Wore.  As always, all opinions presented are my own.

What’s in my Bag: Going to the Pool

June 30, 2015

What's in My Pool Bag
clockwise from top left: pretzel pool float {save version available at 5 below} + old navy flip flops (on sale!) + h&m mesh overlay bikini top (on sale, size up! runs small) + donut pool float {save version available at 5 below} + kindle + kate spade new york water bottle + h&m sunglasses + h&m beach towel {sold out online, similar}
It seems like every summer my first trip to the pool is so chaotic; what do I bring, did I forget sunscreen, do I even really want to wear sunscreen, I don’t think I’m going to get thirsty but what if I do?

Eventually, I settle into the routine of going to the pool but it takes awhile; even though it’s been years I’m still so used to having a pool in my backyard and being able to just walk right into the house and get what I need.

This summer, I’ve been all about fun pool floats. Last week, I completed my summer trinity by picking up the popsicle and for now my food floats are complete. They’re kind of tacky, but also fun, colorful and a great conversation starter; all of the lifeguards at my pool know me as “food float girl.” I ain’t mad at it.

I have enough swim suits but something about the H&M top caught my eye while I was at the store a couple weeks ago and I couldn’t let it go. As I said above, it runs small so size up; I usually wear a small or extra small bikini top and am wearing a 6 in this one. The top has the zip closure in the front, has light padding and no underwire or pushup.  I opted out of buying the matching bottoms and instead just wear a solid black bottom I have from Target.

While my pool has vending machines, I really, really am slowly but surely trying to work on my daily water intake. This is certainly something I could make a stronger effort at, but I try to take a water bottle with me everywhere.

What’s in your beach/pool bag this summer?

xo, Nicole
