Buffalo Plaid + Herringbone

December 2, 2015

Is there any combo more “Pinterest inspired” than a buffalo plaid shirt and herringbone vest? My vote’s no, but let me know what your favorite Pinspired combos are.

The cooler weather means I’m spending little to no time outside, but the little time that I do spend outdoors requires me being wrapped up. I finally broke down and dragged my coats out of storage this past weekend, however I’m mostly still in denial and wearing my vests for warmth.

shop the post: buffalo plaid shirt {similar | also seen here} + herringbone vest {similar | also seen here} + black skinny jeans + watch {similar} + black boots {similar} + foundation + blush + setting spray + mascara + eyebrow filler + lip color from this set {great gift idea!}

I love this down-filled vest, because of how warm it is, the large pockets (perfect for car keys when I don’t want to bring a purse with me and/or snacks), and the print. My exact vest is currently sold out, but I’ve linked a similar herringbone vest that’s currently on sale for $40 as an added bonus, this seller is offering a free pair of touch screen gloves with your order.

This flannel was a must have item for me last year because of the fun polka dots on the inside of the cuffs and collar, but the fit is a little strange on me. It’s much larger in the chest than most smalls run.

I don’t know how everyone else’s Thanksgiving weekend went, but I came through the weekend feeling so burnt out and spent most of my Sunday recovering from working on Black Friday + Saturday. As tired as I was I still found the energy to go out for Mexican + margs with my co-workers which ended with me getting carded in the most humiliating way possible (“you want a daiquiri….with alcohol? Miss, I’m going to need to see your ID.” #k) and having a very strange restaurant experience. How often do you see people bring their pet bird to a restaurant, order it a taco salad and feed it while it’s sitting in a booster seat? Never.

I also, Lord only knows how, worked up the energy to go to the gym. When I actually manage to get in a regular gym routine, I usually treat myself for making so many regular visits a week. So right now, in the midst of all the holiday craziness, I’m trying to work off the undeniable holiday calories (I’ll never turn down pumpkin pie, buckeyes, chocolate chip cookies, advent calendar candies, etc) and motivate myself with fun new items. I love this S’Well bottle, a Fitbit Flex (although I did put this one on my Christmas list),  and fun new long sleeved workout tops like this one, because wearing a jacket to the gym is overrated.

What Nicole Wore: Buffalo Plaid + Herringbone

I did manage to sneak some (online) shopping in during all of this craziness and am feeling so much better as I’m able to cross out some of the names on my Christmas list. I’m definitely not done by any means; I tend to be the gift giver that somehow keeps accumulating items during the course of November and December, but making progress always makes me feel better.

If you’re still kind of metaphorically stumbling around, be sure to check out Macy’s Friends and Family Sale that starts today. This 25% off sale (free shipping when you spend $99) includes lots of brands and items that are usually excluded and features 10% off select home items with code FRIEND. I love this coffee, tea and cocoa gift set (on sale for $5 with code FRIEND) that includes mugs and could easily be split up to knock out a stocking stuffer, co-worker gift AND act as part of your Secret Santa gift for your friend. Gotta get some mileage out of your money, right? This black and gold Michael Kors watch is another sale fave at just $140.

SHOP MY MACY’S FRIENDS AND FAMILY FAVORITES

The gift guide has lots of good ideas of where to start as well as gifts under $25, $50 and $100. Also if you’re having any “why didn’t I buy that this weekend while it was on sale” remorse, J Crew Factory is offering 40-60% off today!

All of my packages showed up last night, major shoutout to my postman for coming by at 8:30 at night #YouTheRealMVP, so I’m looking forward to putting up my mini tree this weekend and hopefully knocking out some wrapping. I’ll have to decide on some wrapping paper first, obviously, which is consistently one of the toughest decisions I make every holiday season. Do I go classic with red paper with gold foil dots accompanied with white and gold foil striped paper? A trendy buffalo plaid so that I can match my packages? Fa la la llamas? Do I bring back the gold glitter paper from last year? <– Very Nicole-esque but probably not appreciated by all my friends and family when their homes were covered with the residue. My bad, y’all.  Do you all use wrapping paper themes or just go wild and use a little bit of everything?

Hope your Wednesday is stress-free, easy and maybe even a little magical 🙂

Suede Skirt + Houndstooth

November 20, 2015

What Nicole Wore: Suede Skirt + HoundstoothCheers for Friday! This week has been absolutely crazy; I had a great time watching the Wildcats get a win over Duke on Tuesday only to get stranded in Chicago for all of Wednesday. Being home and sleeping in my own bed has been so, so good. -Insert praise hands emoji-

I’m looking forward to getting work out of the way today so I can celebrate my dad’s birthday tonight. Pretty sure I’ll never be able to top surprising him with Wegman’s pancake mix (thanks a million, Amazon), but hopefully he likes this year’s gift.

This white Oxford from Brooks Brothers is a classic closet staple because it can be office or weekend appropriate and is great for layering in the cooler months. I cuffed the sleeves over my gray and navy houndstooth sweater here.

What Nicole Wore: Suede Skirt + HoundstoothI talked about this skirt in my Instagram roundup at the beginning of this week and how I was struggling to style it because of the cut. I decided to fully embrace that it sits lower on my hips and somewhat masked the the low ride by not tucking my top into the skirt.
What Nicole Wore: Suede Skirt + Houndstooth  What Nicole Wore: Suede Skirt + HoundstoothThese accessories feel like they belong together to me. I bought my tortoise link necklace off a daily deal site after admiring the style when J.Crew had it at the retail store. I still can’t quite justify dropping $100+ on costume jewelry, but I always love the sparkle and colors in J. Crew’s pieces.  I love that this piece has neutral colors and also a good amount of sparkle without being too blingy.

My bracelet is this month’s freebie from Modern and Chic Boutique; if you follow me on Instagram, I’ve shared how you can get this bracelet at no cost (minus the flat rate shipping). It’s a great piece for you or you can grab it as a stocking stuffer or Secret Santa gift. Modern and Chic also released some new blanket scarf colors earlier this week and I’m head over heels in love!

Hope you enjoy this last weekend before the holiday madness starts up!

How to Wear Hunter Boots with a Skirt

November 2, 2015

Long time no blog, I know! I finally got super proactive over the weekend and shot a few different outfits – yay for new content and getting lots of real life things accomplished over the past couple weeks.  Today, I’m sharing an outfit idea for the super popular herringbone vest PLUS how to wear Hunter boots with a skirt.

What Nicole Wore: Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice
hm sunglasses {similar} + kendra scott necklace + francesca’s flannel {sold out, similar | also seen here} + j crew factory vest {non JCrew option for $70 | also seen here}

Happy Wednesday and happy first day of autumn! While the mornings have been in the mid 50s lately, it’s still warming up to the mid 80s by the afternoon. Still, I found a chance to pull my herringbone vest out of storage earlier this week and went for it. I haven’t moved my vest collection out of my cedar closet and into my actual closet yet, but this may be the way I start dealing with cold mornings and hot afternoons. This fun buffalo plaid vest (under $30) is always super fun to wear.
What Nicole Wore: Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice

Vests have been my fall staples for awhile now and what I really love about the herringbone print is how well it goes with other patterns. Here are a couple past examples of looks with the “it” vest of fall: with stripes, with buffalo plaid, and with a graphic sweater. I’ve had this vest for two years now and the quality is really good — the down filling makes it super warm and I like how lightweight it is as well. I always hold out for a sale when I’m buying these vests from JCF, $108 is steep in my opinion, and can usually get the price down to somewhere between $55-$65.

Still not super cheap, but I do find the fit and materials superior to the similar style vests I’ve purchased from various boutiques at a similar price point. I would recommend sizing down if you’re looking at ordering this year’s J Crew Factory version.  If you like the black piping as opposed to the steel gray they’re offering this year, several boutiques are carrying that black.

I snagged this new Elisa necklace a few weeks ago while Kendra Scott was donating a percentage of proceeds to cancer research and am so in love! I wear my silver and gold druzy Elisa pretty frequently — the daintiness of the style is perfect for necklace layering and the druzy options are an awesome tiny, shiny statement.

I knew I wanted to have this one when it first came out because the pewter chain and black druzy really called to me. I love how these pieces can go with everything.

I love when the weather cools down but isn’t slap you in the face cold, so I’m looking forward to being able to take tea in my Kate Spade travel mug, hot apple cider with cinnamon, pumpkin cookies (I’m a big believer that pumpkin is something you eat and don’t drink, no PSLs here), and seeing the leaves change.

Eat Cake for Breakfast: It’s My Birthday!

August 11, 2015

I don’t usually post on Tuesdays, but it’s my birthday so I’ll do what I want, ya feel? I feel like so much changed in the past year: I started posting to Instagram daily, got rid of some of the toxic influences in my life, left a job, found a new job, learned to stand up for myself and be assertive, got comfortable in my own skin — to the point where I felt okay with getting in front of a camera and starting this blog, embraced new friendships, began volunteering with my sorority, got even better at dealing with my anxiety, attended a blogger meet up by myself!, and my absolute favorite traveled some more.

Even better I got better at accepting some of the less favorable facets of my personality. I’ve always held grudges, but I’ve started to see myself let go of things from the past. Finding that way to live with a little more grace is something I’m really proud of. I got over my fear of being “friendless,” let go of some friends that frequently made me feel bad about myself and realized the world didn’t fall apart.

So, in less deep and emotional news, above is the cotton candy cupcake from Gigi’s. It’s one of their summer specials and in this season of embracing new things and experiences I decided to break away from my traditional “wedding cake” cupcake and try a summer offering.

While we’re on the topic of Gigi’s, I had to reign in the urge to go on a Twitter rant about the fact that they’ve taken the banana cream pie cupcake off the menu. GIGI. Nah girl, bring that back, stat. The lightness of the frosting and little Nilla wafer on top were too good. How dare you.

on my face: bare minerals foundation + nars blush via nordstrom rack + eyeshadow {wearing sidecar} + eye primer + brow filler + mascara + lipstick c/o influenster + highlighter + setting spray + primer c/o influenster

I’ve gotten to use the Indeed Nanoblur face primer and Covergirl Outlast lipstick from my I Do Voxbox twice now and feel comfortable reviewing them. I’ve said on multiple occasions that I’m not a lipstick fan and once again, I’m reminded why. I exfoliated my lips, applied this lipstick, went and took photos and then came home and immediately took the lipstick off. Despite all of these precautions, my lips are completely dried out and cracking. #NicoleStickToLipTints

The primer was not as offensive — overall, I like the product, just not as much as the primer I typically use. The scent is very light, but I do find the primer to be a bit heavy. I like that it doesn’t immediately begin drying and adhering to the skin when I apply it; usually my primer application kind of resembles a 50 yard dash because I’m moving quickly to put the bottle back down and start distributing over my face before it can absorb. The Nanoblur doesn’t immediately sink in, which can be seen as a pro or a con depending on how much time you like to put into your beauty routine. I don’t like the heaviness of the product. I have combination skin that leans more towards the oily side so any product that is going to contribute to the oil my skin seems to collect as the day goes by is a big no. I was aware of the weight since I’d used this product a week or so ago and used my matte setting spray instead of my dewy finish, but no dice; I still felt like this added to the oiliness I hate getting as the day rolls by.

These products were provided to me by Influenster for testing and reviewing purposes.
