What Nicole Wore: Fall Mixer
shop this post: hm tortoise sunglasses {similar} + vera bradley scarf {also seen here} + target cargo vest {similar | also seen here} + striped tee via sam’s club {similar | also seen here} + roz & ALI blue jeans {similar | also seen here} + charlotte russe crossbody purse {similar} + nail polish + stella dot ring {also seen here}

It amazes me that some people are such accessory haters when they are often the completing part of the outfit. Working in retail means I’ve learned how to sell these pieces, but I often think back to something an old manager said to me.  “Every day when someone gets dressed, they put on one item that they know will get them compliments.”  At first, I was a little lost at her logic, I mean helllllo I want to be complimented on my whole outfit every single day -insert sassy emoji-. But when you think about it, there’s always one piece that takes an outfit from this + this to a finished look that looks intentionally put together.

In this outfit, I’d say that piece is the polka dot scarf.  The pattern play is eye catching and the black scarf with white polka dots is opposite of the white shirt with black stripes. Pattern mixing is a concept that people either love or hate and there are certainly ways to do it at every comfort level. This graphic from History in High Heels is a good starting point if you feel completely overwhelmed with how to start. Matching the colors in the prints is key to making the mixing look more intentional than ‘I got dressed in the closet with the lights off.’    What Nicole Wore: Fall Mixer

I linked a ladies size utility vest with sequin lined pockets above, but I am actually wearing the Target kids version. As usual, I tried both on and really felt like this one was the better fit. I’m wearing a girls Large 10-12. The material is lighter weight than the ladies version. Both are sold out online, but may be available in store.

What Nicole Wore: Dots & Spots
shop this post: old navy cardigan {old | also seen here} + gap embroidered polka dot shirt {thrift find | also seen here} + statement necklace {similar} + tarte blush + roz & ALI black jeans {similar}

While I love getting new clothes, my wallet loves when I try a new combination of pieces I already own. Last week, I decided to pull out this embroidered polka dot shirt from Gap and pair it with my white leopard print. I like that the pattern mixing is a little more subtle.

This weekend was a semi-productive one for me: I finally caught up on emails for the blog and the volunteer work I do with my sorority. Honestly, I’ve been pretty bad lately about letting these pile up so it was such a relief and anxiety reducer to get through it yesterday.  While giving back is 100% worth it and I really enjoy being involved in my sorority on the other side of things, sometimes it stresses me out.

I also watched the premiere of Quantico last night and I’m still not sure if I’m into it or not.

My statement necklaces have been taking a backseat to a lot of my daintier, shorter pieces and my long pendant necklaces, but I thought this black and white stunner really completed this outfit — especially with my sandals. See you back here on Wednesday for the end of month Instagram round up!

What Nicole Wore: You're So Classic
shop the post: kendra scott necklace {also seen here} + francesca’s charleston plaid dress {sold out, similar | also seen here} + target jean vest {similar | also seen here} + michael kors watch {similar, white face} + clarks ankle boots + old navy purse {similar} + nail polish + five below aviators {similar}

This week has seemed hella long. I’ll be super happy to get back in my normal routine next week; just finding a time to do laundry was a real struggle…yikes.  Maybe one day I’ll get the hang of this time management thing.

This week I remixed this dress that I wore a few weeks ago on the blog.  It’s been in the mid 80s most of the week and I opted for pairing this cute plaid dress with neutral pieces like my jean vest, a light tan saddle bag, leather ankle boots and my black Kendra Scott druzy necklace. These pieces made the look more appropriate for the slowly transitioning seasons.

What Nicole Wore: You're So Classic

My jean vest is perfect for this time of the year — it’s great during the cool mornings, but isn’t too heavy (or hot) during the day. While everyone and their mother (and my mother for that fact) lists a jean jacket as one of their wardrobe essentials, I actually don’t own one. I know. I haven’t found a fit that I love and I’m big on not settling for bad sizing or a cut that I don’t like.

What Nicole Wore: You're So Classic

This dress comes in a lightweight fabric and the crochet hem adds a feminine touch onto this classic print that we all love. Another plus is the flattering cut. There’s a couple different dress styles that I enjoy, but something about the fit and flare always draws me in. Being pear shaped, I always want to accentuate my waist, so the nipped in waist is a win-win for me.

These booties are the latest addition to my shoe collection. I’d been looking for a pair with a small heel, maximum comfort and in a shade of leather that I loved. This pair has a 1 3/4 inch square heel that makes it possible for me to wear them all day and stand on my feet for eight hours at work.

What Nicole Wore: Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice
hm sunglasses {similar} + kendra scott necklace + francesca’s flannel {sold out, similar | also seen here} + j crew factory vest {non JCrew option for $70 | also seen here}

Happy Wednesday and happy first day of autumn! While the mornings have been in the mid 50s lately, it’s still warming up to the mid 80s by the afternoon. Still, I found a chance to pull my herringbone vest out of storage earlier this week and went for it. I haven’t moved my vest collection out of my cedar closet and into my actual closet yet, but this may be the way I start dealing with cold mornings and hot afternoons. This fun buffalo plaid vest (under $30) is always super fun to wear.
What Nicole Wore: Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice

Vests have been my fall staples for awhile now and what I really love about the herringbone print is how well it goes with other patterns. Here are a couple past examples of looks with the “it” vest of fall: with stripes, with buffalo plaid, and with a graphic sweater. I’ve had this vest for two years now and the quality is really good — the down filling makes it super warm and I like how lightweight it is as well. I always hold out for a sale when I’m buying these vests from JCF, $108 is steep in my opinion, and can usually get the price down to somewhere between $55-$65.

Still not super cheap, but I do find the fit and materials superior to the similar style vests I’ve purchased from various boutiques at a similar price point. I would recommend sizing down if you’re looking at ordering this year’s J Crew Factory version.  If you like the black piping as opposed to the steel gray they’re offering this year, several boutiques are carrying that black.

I snagged this new Elisa necklace a few weeks ago while Kendra Scott was donating a percentage of proceeds to cancer research and am so in love! I wear my silver and gold druzy Elisa pretty frequently — the daintiness of the style is perfect for necklace layering and the druzy options are an awesome tiny, shiny statement.

I knew I wanted to have this one when it first came out because the pewter chain and black druzy really called to me. I love how these pieces can go with everything.

I love when the weather cools down but isn’t slap you in the face cold, so I’m looking forward to being able to take tea in my Kate Spade travel mug, hot apple cider with cinnamon, pumpkin cookies (I’m a big believer that pumpkin is something you eat and don’t drink, no PSLs here), and seeing the leaves change.

9.21.15 | Taking Summer Favorites to Fall

September 21, 2015

I’m convinced I’m going to be living in summer weather for at least another month, but for the sake of being hopeful that fall is out there, somewhere, headed my way (eventually), I thought I’d wrap up some of my favorite outfits from this summer and how/if I’m planning on taking the clothing items from them into the fall season that officially starts this Wednesday. Anyone else excited about transitioning pieces already in their wardrobe and not just buying new things?

What Nicole Wore: Summer Faves
aviators via five below {similar + splurge} + rebecca minkoff clutch via nordstrom rack {exact sold out, similar | also seen here} + francesca’s bow back tank {clearance find, similar style} + roz and ALI white jeans {sold out, similar} + target cargo vest {similar | also seen here} + wedges via dsw {old | also seen here}

This vest has been on everyone’s fall staples list for 5ever, but I just got around to buying one this summer. Already fighting the urge to wear it every single day, so you can count on it making lots more appearances on the blog. I particularly love it layered over a plaid shirt with white jeans (rule breaker over here hey!)
