How I Upgraded My Bed Without Buying a New Mattress

November 11, 2021

Time to come clean: I’m a hot sleeper. Still even with being someone that was regularly waking up sweaty (#yikes), I was sleeping on jersey sheets. On top of regularly feeling overheated, I found myself also debating whether or not to purchase a new mattress. Ultimately, I decided to make some less expensive choices which meant I upgraded my bed without buying a new mattress.

How I Upgraded My Bed Without Buying a New Mattress | The Sheets That Didn’t Work for Me

When I was ready to switch from jersey sheets, I bought these microfiber sheets from Amazon after seeing a few influencers I follow rave about them and reading the reviews. I ended up being incredibly underwhelmed. While they seemed nice enough when I first got them, they began pilling after a couple of washes. The pilling continued to get worse and worse. Eventually, I switched back to my tried and true jersey cotton sheets.

While I love jersey sheets for their comfort, I tend to be a hot sleeper. I still have a set of jersey sheets that I plan to use in the chillier winter months, but found over time that using them in the summer seemed to be contributing to me waking up sweaty.

How I Upgraded My Bed Without Buying a New Mattress | The Benefits of Eucalyptus Sheets & Why I Wanted to Try Them

Early in the summer, I started getting sponsored ads for eucalyptus sheets and I was intrigued. Some benefits of eucalyptus sheets:

  • more breathable than cotton and softer than linen
  • eco-friendly; eucalyptus sheets are more sustainable than cotton, linen, and microfiber sheets
  • eucalyptus sheets are more breathable than cotton sheets
  • it takes less energy and water to make eucalyptus sheets

The biggest selling point to me was that these sheets are advertised as the best for hot sleepers. I’m always hot during the summer months. Additionally over the past few years, I’ve started having hot flashes during my periods. {0/10 would not recommend.} While sleeping with a fan helps a bit, I still would find myself waking up in a puddle of my own sweat pretty regularly even if I took my duvet off and just slept with the top sheet.

Finally back in July, I caved to my interest and ordered a set of eucalyptus sheets from Sheets & Giggles. I had been eyeing this set of Buffy eucalyptus sheets but opted for the Sheets & Giggles ones due to the slightly lower price point and much cuter name. I’ve been sleeping on these since mid-July and am a big fan. The sheets have made it possible for me to sleep with the duvet on the bed and to wake up without being drenched in sweat. (Minus the monthly hot flashes.)

In feel, eucalyptus sheets remind me of what you’d expect at a hotel and I love that the sheets are cool to the touch.

The other bedding related problem, I’ve had was with my mattress. It’s generally recommended to replace your mattress every six to eight years which I have definitely bypassed. Before buying a new mattress, I decided to buy a new mattress topper and I’ve been so impressed. I ended up choosing a Serta memory foam topper with cooling gel; it feels like I’m sleeping on a cloud. The memory foam contours to my sleeping position whether I’m sleeping on my side or back.
