Denim Dress Two Ways for Work and Weekend

March 18, 2019

Give me all the spring vibes please!  One of the BEST things about this past weekend was the sunshine.  Yesterday, I cracked open my sunroof and listened to some throwback tunes while I was driving which made it an amazing Sunday.  With spring almost being here, I wanted to share this cute printed denim dress and two ways to wear it.

Denim Dress Two Ways for Work and Weekend | Let’s Get Derby

This denim dress from Draper James caught my eye right away.  The white denim is different than the traditional chambray dresses you see & the bird and floral print seems so springy.  Draper James‘ dresses are definitely investment pieces for me; the price is a bit more than I typically spend, but the quality is wonderful and I really like that the pieces are versatile.

For my “weekend” look in this dress, I’m styling this as a Derby outfit.  The combination of baby blue, navy, and white screams spring to me.  To make this look ready for Churchill Downs, I pulled out a light blue fascinator that has a bit of veil and feathers.  {Julie has TONS of affordable hat and fascinator options that you can leave as is or even add to if you want to change things up!}  My pastel blue, long necklace can be worn doubled or even tripled for depending on the length and style you want.  This straw bag was one of my favorite pieces last year (see it here and here).  To me, it’s perfect for the track because of the combination of handles and crossbody strap.

Denim Dress Two Ways for Work and Weekend | The Makeup

One thing that’s necessary for a good Derby weekend look is makeup that will stay in place.  I’m wearing the brand new Naked Reloaded palette in these pictures; I love that I can create looks that are appropriate for both more conservative settings where I need a very natural look as well as more dramatic, night out looks.

I always make sure to use the Urban Decay Primer Potion on my eyelids before applying -any- eyeshadow.  It helps so much with keeping your eyeshadow from creasing; I also always set my makeup before I apply mascara with the All Nighter Setting Spray.  Definitely recommend both of these if you have longer events where you want your makeup to hold up.  I’ve used both of these products for years and swear by them.

Denim Dress Two Ways for Work and Weekend | Casual Work Wear

Denim isn’t something that works for most formal work environments, but luckily in my previous two jobs I was able to wear jeans and colored denim before that.  This is definitely a cute look for Casual Fridays and one that you can quickly swap accessories for if heading straight from the office to happy hour.  For this look, I pulled out my trusty field jacket.

My olive jacket is one of those pieces, I find myself reaching for when I don’t know what to wear.  Layer it over a basic tee with leggings for the weekend, throw it on over a dress to make the look casual, the possibilities are endless.  Not kidding — check out my capsule wardrobe post featuring this jacket styled multiple ways.  If this is a little too casual for you, swap the field jacket for your favorite navy or tan blazer!

Denim Dress Two Ways for Work and Weekend | Complete the Look

A pair of baby blue heels would look killer with this, but if you don’t have a pair try olive flats, booties, or pumps.  The perforated look of these Lucky Brand booties is so fun to me and makes them one of my favorite pairs for spring and fall.  Block heels are much easier on my feet so I tend to opt for them over a true heel.

My Transport Tote is a personal favorite for days when I’m taking meetings and on the go.  I can easily fit my day planner, MacBook, and a notebook inside alongside my essentials and this color goes with just about everything.  For jewelry, I embraced the green by putting on a green multi strand necklace from Work the Metal.  My white resin earrings are another look for less find from Work the Metal!  Let me know in the comments which look you like better!
