Closet Workhorse: Why You Need a Little Black Dress

August 22, 2017

A few weeks ago I got a panicked text from one of the women I advise. My younger sorority sister wanted to know what she could wear to a job interview that was already in her closet. {Mind you, I’ve never gone through Anne’s closet so making a quick choice should’ve been a challenge.} Instead, I almost immediately was able to tell her the closet workhorse that would be perfect for the occasion: the little black dress.

While some styles come and go, the little black dress is eternal. The first LBD that I can remember buying came into my life during my sophomore year of high school from a small boutique in Pasadena. Y’all I still have and wear it…ten years later.

Of course, my wardrobe today consists of multiple black dresses because I know the versatility of this closet workhorse and see the value of this style. Ever wondered why most sororities make their members have one nice black dress? It’s because this style prepares them for life beyond college. That one little black dress works for job interviews, meeting the parents, networking events, funerals, holiday parties, etc. While I was in undergrad, I wore my closet workhorse to sorority meetings, scholarship interviews, fraternity formals, and a number of other events.

Closet Workhorse | How I Accessorized It.

The beauty of this style is that it doesn’t always have to be formal and that the overall outfit is easy to change based on the completer pieces you choose. I recently got the Taj Clutch from Stella & Dot’s new fall releases and love the way this embroidered black clutch elevates my whole look. I finished my look with a patent leather black heel that features scallops for a fun take on a classic shoe and metallic ball drop earrings.

It's all in the details! Style blogger, What Nicole Wore, wears metallic ball drop earrings with everyone's favorite closet workhorse and an embroidered clutch.
