Classy Thanksgiving Outfit + 5 Safe Topics for the Dinner Table

November 22, 2017

It’s no secret that I love a little black dress so it only made sense to snag a new one for the holiday season. So many people get stressed about what to wear during the holidays, but let me tell you. If you have a little black dress, you’re ready for any occasion. I ordered this scalloped neckline dress from Draper James because it’s the perfect classy Thanksgiving outfit that can be re-worn for holiday parties and beyond.

All you need for your holiday parties is THIS @draperjames dress. Find out why PLUS some safe dinner table topics: Click To Tweet

I’m also sharing a list of topics to bring up around your family that encourage conversation that doesn’t turn angry or awkward. We’ve all been there where someone’s brought up something about another family member or the news that’s led to a, let’s say, hostile environment, right?

Classy Thanksgiving | 5 Safe Conversation Starters for the Thanksgiving table

  • You favorite new fall TV shows! | This is productive for a few reasons. Everyone loves to feel like an expert and chances are you all aren’t watching the exact same shows. Also, if you love a show that might get cancelled, you’re adding a new viewer to the mix. {PS. If you’re looking for something to binge this holiday, I highly recommend The Brave and the Good Doctor!}
  • The best way to use Thanksgiving leftovers. | Personally, I love getting recipes that someone else has already tried for me so that I know it’s gonna be good. Ask how everyone uses up ALL the turkey or what they do with the leftover cranberry sauce.
  • The top Black Friday item you want to score. | You may actually be braving the crowds with your tribe, but tell them anyway. Totally safe and gives your grandparents a chance to rant about newfangled technology. PS. There’s a HUGE Black Friday post coming to the blog Friday morning at 12:01 EST so be sure to check back!
  • Trips + Vacations | Everyone may not have been on one, but odds are someone in the room has gone on at least a long weekend trip. Get the tea and find out what they loved, hated, where they stayed, and what the best part of the trip was. BONUS: ask everyone where their dream vacation is!  Sidenote: my dad tried doing this a few years ago with a super long photo slideshow of our Europe vacation. When he started getting super long winded {Dad if you’re reading this, it was.}, my brother and I took over with funny commentary and anecdotes.
  • Social media | No, not in a ‘did you see that Becky from high school is pregnant already?!’ way, but ask what everyone’s favorite follows and accounts to check up on are. This will clearly work best at the cousin table but include as many people are you can.
Family in town and need some safe topics of conversation? Here's 5 that'll save you from awkwardness: Click To Tweet

Classy Thanksgiving | The Outfit

The immediate eyecatcher with this dress was the embossed print followed by the scallop, crochet neckline. Once the little black dress arrived, it really started winning because POCKETS! I know, what’s better right? Especially for the holidays when you’re going to be socializing and don’t want to carry around a clutch, but you don’t want a heavy purse weighing you down. I went bare legged when I shot this, but I fully intend to throw on some fleece tights the next time I wear this to stay warm.

I mean who doesn't need a little black dress WITH POCKETS?! #fbloggers Click To Tweet

Classy Thanksgiving | The Shoes

One of the main reasons I went without tights was these amazing red shoes. I wanted a new pair of statement shoes specifically for the holidays. While red isn’t usually a color I go for, I couldn’t resist these bow mules from Chinese Laundry. The low block heel makes them super practical for the parties when you may be walking up and down a driveway to your car while the bold red bows make them festive as all get out.

Classy Thanksgiving | The Makeup

Once we reach Thanksgiving, my look feels incomplete without a bold red lip. I hadn’t worn this matte liquid red lipstick in a couple months, but as soon as I put it on it was like a lightbulb moment. ‘This is why I love it!’

An honest review of the @ColourPopCo #ElementOfSurprise palette #bbloggers Click To Tweet

I picked up this palette from ColourPop the last time they did free shipping; it’s the first eye product I’ve purchased from them and I’ve really enjoyed using it different ways. I will say that I find myself reaching for other palettes to get mattes for transitions and more muted looks; while the palette lists six mattes and six metallic, I’ve found the mattes to be so-so. But for $16, I think the palette’s worth the money.

Wishing you a very happy Thanksgiving! Xx

You look absolutely incredible! I love Draper James. My family is so low-key for Thanksgiving, so I’ll definitely be sporting some jeans and a plain tee, I’m sure. I love your conversation starter ideas. I could talk forever about my favorite fall TV shows. This Is Us is my absolute favorite! I’ve never watched The Brave or the Good Doctor.

I agree with the others the jacket is great! And funny (sad?) that we have to come up with safe topics now for conversation. Everything is political now(hurricanes? really?) so we do the vacation topic a lot. Not just where we’ve been but where are we planning or hoping to go. I saw your photo on Patti’s linkup and thought I’d drop by!
