IG Roundup

April 25, 2016

I know I say this all the time, but I can’t believe how quickly time is flying by! I’m ready to wrap up the past couple weeks from my Instagram {@whatnicolewore}.  My Instagram photos are also ready to shop with LIKEtoKNOW.it — sign up once and following that, all you have to do is “like” photos to receive direct links to the items I wear in your inbox.  Don’t want to receive any more emails? Same boat here! Simply go to “settings,”  and update your email frequency. I’ve set mine to “don’t send me these emails.”  Then you can head to the direct link in LIKEtoKNOWit captions for details or log on at your computer to see your liked photo’s details.

I loved this one piece suit when I first saw it online, but was super bummed when the reviews said it had strange sizing. I ended up ordering when Aerie had a $22 swim promo and the suit fits perfectly; I’m excited to wear it next month at the beach and all summer at the pool.

This t-shirt dress seemed like it paired perfectly with my cotton blazer {it’s washable, super soft and not stiff like most blazers #HereForIt}, but I really love how this tassel necklace from Lucie’s Locket made the whole outfit look complete.

Derby Days: Damask for Derby

April 24, 2016

Popping in for a very rare Sunday post, but I unfortunately did not get to share last week’s Derby Days post so I wanted to catch up today (:  I had the best time yesterday co-hosting a blogger style event at Macy’s and will definitely be sharing some more about it as well as photos soon!

I’ve had so much fun writing this Derby Days series; it’s actually something that’s been over a year in the making; when I first started my blog last March, I really wanted to do Derby related posts but wasn’t in the position to do it at the time.  This year, I started planning stuff out in February and it’s been awesome to see it all come together.  With less than two weeks until the big race, I just want to take a moment to say thank you x a million to all of my sponsors that have been apart of this series and my wonderful readers that have given such positive feedback.

featured in this post: shein: damask print dress {also seen here} + charlotte russe: mint bauble necklace {old, similar | also seen here} + old navy: mint sandals {also seen here} + kate spade new york: clutch {comes with crossbody strap | also seen here} + jord watch: fieldcrest watch c/o {also seen here} + DIY hat {base from Dee’s} + opi: nail polish + colourpop: liquid satin lipstick
What Nicole Wore: Damask for Derby

I ordered this dress last year from SheIn and it was the very first item that I ordered from them.  The fit is perfect and I love the gorgeous and bold spring colors.  I wore this last year for Easter, but am always looking for new ways to work this dress into my closet rotation.  I’ve styled it before on the blog with a jean vest, but when I started planning out my Derby content, I knew that I wanted this dress to be apart of it.

What Nicole Wore: Damask for Derby

My mom and I usually make hats when we go to Derby or Oaks and two years ago, I snagged this white hat from Dee’s, a local Louisville craft store.  Dee’s always has stunning hats + the option to have a hat made custom to go with your outfit, but as I’ve said before — it’s not uncommon for the hat to end up being more than your outfit.  Even the plain bases {like this white one} are a bit pricy {not compared to other hat stores in the area, just in general}; I want to say I paid a little more than $50 for this one and that’s on the less expensive side for Dee’s.  Still even with their prices, I really do love going to the store because all of their supplies and finished hats and fascinators are beautiful.

I really wanted to pull in the mint from my dress after I decided on wearing this hat with it, so I brought out my mint bauble necklace {still a personal favorite!} and my new mint sandals from Old Navy.  Side note on these sandals: they come in a ton of colors and keep going on sale.  I’m pretty sure I want to do some kind of DIY project on them, but haven’t gotten the time to yet.  Stay tuned.

I chose to keep accessories minimal and just wore my Fieldcrest watch instead of any bracelets.  I love the classic and neutral wood; it’s always a big conversation starter in crowds too. If you’re looking for something special for Mother’s Day, be sure to check out JORD’s site!  I love how these watches are such unique gifts.

My clutch is actually a crossbody bag that I take the strap off of when I want a clutch.  I bought this three years ago for Kentucky Oaks from Nordstrom Rack.  It has 8 card slots inside so that I can put my ID, cards and some cash in without losing room to a wallet and then is the right size for my phone, hair ties, keys and other essentials.  Bonus: the inside is a fun black and white striped fabric.  Churchill Downs did switch to a smaller purse requirement a few years ago for safety reasons so this one has been the perfect size + I love the crossbody option.

Vertical Striped Blouse

April 22, 2016

I got asked to describe my personal style this week and surprisingly really struggled to come up with a complete answer. While I like to think that I’m trendy and edgy, I think I typically wear classic pieces with some bright colors and lots of patterns.  I love clean lines and today’s post is for sure a classic look.

What Nicole Wore: Vertical Striped Blouse
featured in this post: shein: striped oversized blouse c/o + adorn apparel: white skirt c/o {similar | also seen here} + old navy: black fringe sandals {on sale, also available with off white fringe | also seen here} + kendra scott: silver druzy necklace {also seen here} + light pink beaded necklace + francesca’s: tassel bracelet {also seen here} + francesca’s: geometric watch {old, similar} + kate spade new york: black quilted leather purse {thrifted from clothes mentor, similar option linked and here | also seen here} + lucie’s locket: pearl ring c/o {sold out, similar} + colourpop: matte lipstick {also seen here} + tarte: blush + urban decay: eyeshadow + tarte: mascara
As soon as I saw this top on SheIn’s website, I knew I wanted it. I mean blue and white stripes in a button down? My favorite color combo with my favorite pattern, how could I resist?  The blue is a lot bolder than it appears in the pictures on the website; I pictured an oxford blue, but this blouse is closer to a royal blue {which I still love!} It’s super oversized so I decided to tuck it into a skirt so that I could add a little bit of shape to my figure.

What Nicole Wore: Vertical Striped Blouse

I love this white flowy skirt for spring and summer; it has such a feminine silhouette but adds a little edge with the mesh detail at the bottom while still maintaining a classy and work appropriate vibe.

Since this shirt has a menswear inspired look, I chose to gravitate towards girly accessories.  I layered my five strand light pink necklace over my silver, short druzy necklace and then choose a patterned watch that I picked up last spring from Francesca’s with a tassel stretch bracelet that my sweet friend Heather sent to me.  I picked out this ring from Lucie’s Locket a couple months ago and I love the open detail that “closes” with a rhinestone on one side and a pearl on the other.

Also, how adorable would this outfit be for a gender reveal party?! Now, I just need to find someone that’s expecting haha.

I bought this bag last year from my local Clothes Mentor and it’s still one of my favorites.  I actually did not own a classic black tote prior to this so it has definitely filled a hole in my closet.  I love the size, compartments and quilted detail, along with the gold hardware.  I’ve found myself carrying it a little less lately

When I started putting my makeup on, I decided I really wanted to wear a bright, spring lipstick and ended up settling on this color. I’ve been wearing a lot of “classic” lip colors lately so going for something a little more fun was an easy way to change up my makeup routine.

Double Dots: LuLaRoe Cassie Skirt

April 20, 2016

I’m always amazed at the power and reach of social media and the connections I’ve been able to make thanks to it.  A few weeks ago my Instagram friend Tracy, put me in contact with her friend from college Sue, who recently moved to Louisville and became a LuLaRoe consultant.  Sue invited me to her first open house and when I shared that I wouldn’t be able to make it {morning 5k + afternoon/evening sorority advisor commitments #wah}, she was sweet enough to offer to let me shop beforehand!

While I’ve been hearing and seeing a lot of LuLaRoe on Instagram and through fellow bloggers {I love Tif’s post with her Cassie skirt!}, this was the first time that I’d shopped, tried on and touched LuLaRoe clothing.

What Nicole Wore | Double Dots: LuLaRoe Cassie Skirt
featured in this post: polka dot knit tee {old} + cassie skirt c/o LuLaRoe Sue Stephens + marble print leather envelope clutch {available in solid colors | also seen here} + fringe wedge {also seen here} + black watch {also seen here} + white rose necklace {also seen here} + tassel bracelet set + lipstick {under $15} + nail polish
What Nicole Wore | Double Dots: LuLaRoe Cassie Skirt

So here’s the basic gist: each LuLaRoe consultant is able to place an order for the styles she wants to carry. After that, it’s all a surprise — the fabric is made into a variety of styles so there’s no telling what each consultant will receive.  It also means that when you see a piece you like in your size, you should grab it, because you probably will not be able to find it again.  {There’s some exceptions — like the pair of solid black leggings I ended up buying.}  Overall, I had a great shopping experience. I love that the clothes:

  • come in a wide variety of bright and vibrant patterns and prints
  • are incredibly modest — tee’s are oversized and perfect to wear with leggings, dresses and skirts hit at at least the knee
  • sizing goes from 2T to 3X – every lady you know should be able to find something for her {This might be my favorite!!}

What Nicole Wore | Double Dots: LuLaRoe Cassie Skirt

Sue was kind enough to not only open her home to me, but also to tell me all about LuLaRoe and allow me to try on every and anything I thought was cute.  This Cassie skirt immediately caught my eye since we all are completely aware of my love for all things cobalt.  The mint polka dots were a huge bonus and I was super pumped when the skirt fit {I went with a small for reference.}  I like that the Cassie is made of a stretchy but somewhat thick and forgiving material.  The waist can be folded over {like I’m wearing it here} or left alone for a length that hits the knee.

I was trying to decide how I wanted to style this and while going through my closet realized that it would look so cute mixed with even more polka dots.  I liked my white rose necklace to bring out some more neutral color and emphasize the white polka dots in my shirt.  I always forget how lacking my jewelry collection is when it comes to white necklaces…but it really is.  I have a bad habit of picking something colorful over something neutral, but I’m currently crushing on these fun white necklaces:

Destroyed Jeans

April 18, 2016

Cheers to Monday!  I enjoyed a gorgeous weekend filled with 70+ days and could not be happier to have enjoyed sunshine and warmth again, even if I could do without the allergies that inevitably come with the timing of everything coming into bloom.

What Nicole Wore: Destroyed Jeans
in this post: navy blazer {thrifted, similar} + embroidered tank + very distressed jeans {under $40} + cognac wedges {also seen here} + turquoise cuff {old, similar} + black watch {just $30 | also seen here} + kylie cosmetics matte lipstick in posie k {similar color here} + nail polish + blush
What Nicole Wore: Destroyed Jeans

Some of my favorite things lately:

  • The Toronto Raptors mascot dresses up as Justin Bieber | The NBA playoffs started over the weekend and as most people know I live and breathe all things basketball. While Toronto isn’t one of my teams by any means, I love the way their marketing team has been so thorough in making their brand super strong from bringing in Drake as a Global Ambassador and having him announce starting lineups to creating a slogan that other teams have tried to steal to nicknaming their arena Jurassic Park.  This stunt from over the weekend really showed how they bring their A game {even if their team didn’t…}
  • I’ve been seriously crushing on this bikini top {still holding out hope that it’ll go on sale}, but ended up snagging this one over the weekend in white. Last year, I stayed away from scrappy, caged suits because I already had some interesting tanlines from vacation in Europe, but I realized life is too short to avoid cute bikini tops because of weird tan lines {that’s how the saying goes right?} I also grabbed this high neck top because I love the trend.
  • The Donut Disturb beach hat! I’m super excited to wear this hat at the beach next month and am already trying to figure out when I can make another sequin sun hat — trying to decide between Vitamin Sea and Out of Office still.
  • This list of cheesy foods has me drooling…I need those spinach dip mozzarella sticks in my life {and belly} ASAP.

What Nicole Wore: Destroyed Jeans

So onto today’s look! While I love shopping, anytime I need a new pair of jeans I feel a serious sense of dread. The whole process of grabbing 7 different pairs of denim and trying them all on just to find that none of them work is incredibly frustrating. And I know it’s not just me: most of my girlfriends mention the same disdain for jean shopping despite having a wide variety of body types: petite, tall, larger calves, bigger thighs, big hips, small hips, etc.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned over the years is to not order jeans online until I’ve had a chance to try them on for size — otherwise I’m going to need to order 2-4 different sizes and be ready to deal with returns.  I’ve been eyeing a few pairs at Nordstrom Rack, but with sizing being so different for every brand, I knew I’d rather go to a store a try a few different brands on first.  I tried on a couple different pairs from Joe’s Jeans, HUDSON jeans and then fell in love with this pair from STS Blue. I ended up sizing down to a 27 in these; I always struggle with finding denim that fits in the thighs, hips and waist so I was thrilled to find a pair that made the cut.  I also love that they’re a mid-rise; they comfortably stay up and there’s no worrying about anything hanging out that I don’t want to hang out.   The distressed style has grown a lot on me over the past couple months, but I was still surprised to find that I actually liked these when I put these on.

What Nicole Wore: Destroyed Jeans

This embroidered tank from Old Navy is short in the center and longer on the sides.  I paired it with a navy three quarter sleeve blazer to provide some balance to the super distressed {borderline destroyed} jeans.  I love navy and white together year round but I think it’s really a perfect color combo once the warm weather returns.  I wore a similar version of this outfit last week and swapped the blazer for my long sleeveless duster sweater from this post and love the boho vibe it gave the look.
