Red Off The Shoulder Top + $100 SheIn Giveaway!

June 13, 2016

This red orange off the shoulder top is the perfect color for summer and follows the super popular off the shoulder trend.  I love how the bold color looks with white skinny jeans; one of my favorite things about summer style is being able to pair rich colors with white jeans all season.

What Nicole Wore: Red Off The Shoulder Top

This striped straw tote is a great size for carrying everything you need during the summer; it has a medium sized pouch inside for your keys and phone and can also hold a beach towel, sunscreen and other summer essentials.  The rope handle gives the bag a fun nautical touch.  Bonus: this tote also comes in navy and white stripes!

What Nicole Wore: Red Off The Shoulder Top

I paired the red-orange with my yellow beaded statement necklace and my oversized pink hoplite ring {latest obsession to be honest}.  I’ve been loving the marble trend for a minute now and couldn’t resist this fun piece in the hot pink.

What Nicole Wore: Red Off The Shoulder Top

I love the blue ombre and gold frames on my new aviators; I definitely see myself wearing these throughout the summer – the shape is different than all of the aviators I already own.

Pom Pom Off the Shoulder Top

June 10, 2016

Happy, happy Friday! Bringing you a super colorful and affordable look today in front of one of the prettiest walls in all of Louisville.  I’ve been wanting to go take pictures here for awhile and kept putting it off but after visiting the gorgeous Wynwood Walls, I knew I had to see the fun murals in my own hometown.

featured in this post: shein: off the shoulder top {under $15} + dressbarn: skinny jeans {also seen here} + forever 21: fringe wedges {also seen here} + pink howlite ring {also seen here} + stella dot: gold ring {also seen here} + hobby lobby: red bandana {similar} + karen walker: sunglasses c/o DITTO {also seen here} + kate spade: pink clutch {also seen here} + colourpop: matte x lippie stix

What Nicole Wore: Rainbow Pom Pom Off the Shoulder Top

I’ve been stocking up on the off the shoulder trend for summer over the past few weeks and loved the throwback bell sleeves and colorful pom poms on this white top.  The top is a soft cotton material and honestly makes me feel like I’m snugged up in my jersey sheets.  I’m wearing an XS; if you want a longer fit, I’d recommend sizing up.  And the best part is, the top is only $14!

I love this matte lipstick from ColourPop; I have a ton of their liquid lipsticks, but this is my first of the Lippie Stix.  They’re available in sheer, matte and satin finishes and like most ColourPop products the color payoff is amazing! I’m wearing one coat of this lipstick and only used my lip liner to outline my lips.

So let’s talk Friday Favorites:

  • I love how chic two piece sets look, but am so terrified of my thighs #typical.  The print and tassel detail on this one that Amy styled this week are gorgeous and make me want to go hunt down a set that works for me though!
  • Y’all – I am crushing on my new leopard clutch so hard.  It still hasn’t made its blog debut yet, but it had to be a Friday Favorite because…it’s under $40 + free shipping. Thank you eBay Gods, I am forever indebted to you. {Btw, that’s not an affiliate link, that’s a ‘you need this in your life at this price’ link.}
  • I just discovered Lindsay’s blog this week {yay more Kentucky bloggers!} and loved reading her thoughts on trusting organic growth on social media, specifically loop giveaways on Instagram. Without getting too far up on my soapbox, it can be incredibly frustrating to see mediocre accounts grow exponentially from indirectly {or directly} purchasing followers.  Seeing other bloggers struggle with the same “jealousy” always makes me feel a little bit better about sticking to my guns.
  • Obsessed with the print of Erin’s carry on bag; blue and white pretty much guarantees that I’ll like just about anything.

Since I was embracing all the trends of my childhood, I decided to go ahead and throw on a bandana too.  I was struggling to decide on a necklace to go with this shirt and suddenly thought, ‘but what if I just wore a bandana as a choker?’ Neck scarves are definitely making a comeback and I love the classic look of a red bandana for summertime.  {I 100% plan to rock this one at some point during the 4th of July week!}

Polka Dot LuLaRoe Cassie Skirt + Kind Self Thought

June 8, 2016

An April 2017 update! A year later this post about the LuLaRoe Cassie skirt continues to be one of my most popular blog posts; if you’re interested in seeing more LuLaRoe check out the following posts:

  • A lace LuLaRoe Lola Skirt
  • Another polka dot LuLaRoe Cassie Skirt
  • How to wear your black LuLaRoe Leggings for fall
  • Springing forward with the LuLaRoe Madison
  • Valentine’s Day with LuLaRoe Amelia
  • LuLaRoe Valentine’s Day leggings

I will try my best to continue updating this with LuLaRoe posts!

One of my big focuses the past few years has been not only to take better care of myself across the board, but also to work on how I think about myself and talk to myself {surprise — I’m totally one of those crazy people that has full blown conversations with themselves!}

I read this poem about two years ago and it’s something that’s resonated strongly with me ever since.

“I treat myself like I would treat my daughter. I brush her hair, wash her laundry, tuck her in goodnight. Most importantly, I feed her. I do not punish her. I do not berate her, leave tears staining her face. I do not leave her alone. I know she deserves more. I know I deserve more.” — Michelle K.

I don’t write about my struggles with anxiety and depression all that often but the fact is that even now, years after my initial diagnosis, I still struggle day to day with being kind to myself.  Reaching a point where I don’t feel the need to internally berate myself for something small has been a huge milestone for me personally, but perhaps an even bigger success lately has been recognizing things when I’m in situations that are causing me to backslide.  The past couple months have been extremely tough personally, but I’m proud of the way I’ve stuck up for myself and known that my heart and intentions are pure.

So what does that long intro have to do with today’s post? Well aside from the fact that it’s heavy on my heart and mind as I’m writing, it also has a little bit to do with LuLaRoe.  {Disclaimer: this is not a sponsored post!}  My good friend Tracy was my first real introduction to LuLaRoe’s products.  I had previously blown them off; I’m not a leggings kinda gal — I know atrocious right?  One of Tracy’s college friends is a Louisville local and I shopped with her a bit before this post.  While I was shopping with Sue, I was struck by how incredible it is to find a company so focused on empowering women through clothing that includes a wide variety of sizes, shapes and silhouettes.What Nicole Wore: LuLaRoe Cassie Skirt

I entered Sue’s house fully intending to pick something out for my blog post and leave and ended up spending over an hour with her talking about LuLaRoe the company and how powerful inclusive clothing can be and ended up leaving with several purchases for myself and my mom on top of the item for my blog post.  My mom ended up not liking the skirt I picked out for her {ironic, I know}, so I went back last month and swapped it out for this fun polka dot LuLaRoe Cassie skirt for me.What Nicole Wore: LuLaRoe Cassie Skirt

In so many ways, blogging has been my creative outlet beyond work, beyond school, beyond reading and all the other things I enjoy doing to keep myself busy and focused on the good.  I don’t think I realized it at the time, but fashion was something that allowed me to feel good about myself when I wasn’t able to see much good in myself.  And what a blessing it is to be able to understand what the difference in those two is now.

Summer Maxi Dress

June 6, 2016

Last week seemed to fly by and I have a feeling this one will too.  I can’t say I’m mad about it.  This weekend was a busy one with sorority advisor training, but more importantly catching up on all the sleep I didn’t get last week.  Embarrassed to share, but I spent most of the weekend sleeping…I’d probably be upset about it if I wasn’t feeling so refreshed.

What Nicole Wore: Summer Maxi Dress
featured in this post: shein: printed maxi dress c/o {sold out} + charlotte russe: mint bib necklace {old, similar | also seen here} + old navy: crossbody purse {old, similar | also seen here} + target style: belt {old, similar} + clarks shoes: sandals {old, love these!} + tory burch: mint leather wrap bracelet + wristology watches: black watch {under $50 | also seen here} + karen walker: sunglasses c/o DITTO {also seen here} + china glaze: nail polish + colourpop: lipstick + tarte: tinted moisturizer + nars: blush
My maxi dress sold out super quickly, but I wanted to share some of the other really cute {and affordable!} maxis that SheIn has in stock right now:

What Nicole Wore: Summer Maxi Dress

I was in love with the bright colors and fun printed detail on this dress when I first saw it online. The thigh slit isn’t too high which is a major plus too.  It came with a tie belt made from the same fabric as the dress that I ended up taking off and replacing with a belt that came with an old skirt from Target.  The soft blue  in this dress made me want to embrace pastels a little more, so I pulled out my mint leather bracelet.  When I think of pastels, I usually categorize them as a spring thing, but they’re also great to incorporate into your summer wardrobe.

What Nicole Wore: Orange Maxi Dress

I felt a little hesitant about this thigh slit, but it wasn’t too, too high; this dress was too sheer for me on the bottom and my legs were clearly visible so I did pull on my mini slip underneath.  I was slightly concerned that it would be showing with the thigh slit, but after I pulled it up {to my waist}, it worked just fine.

What Nicole Wore: Summer Maxi Dress

I’ve been holding onto these tortoise frames from DITTO for almost a month now; y’all I love them so hard! I haven’t decided if I’m ready to swap them out yet, but I love the flexibility that DITTO’s designer eyewear gives me to hang on to pairs that I love as long as I want or immediately swap frames that I don’t like out.  The program starts at just $24 a month with options for prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses; try one month out for free by entering code whatnicolewore at checkout!
