Where Nicole Went: Cincinnati Travel Diary

July 11, 2016

I hope you’re ready for a full work week; I’m already feeling like I might be dragging behind the struggle bus, but I’m keeping a positive mind that I’m going to get through this.

Today, I am sharing some photos from my long weekend in Cincinnati.  I went right before the 4th to watch a good friend of mine get married.  While I’ve been to Cincinnati a few times {it’s only an hour and a half from Louisville}, its always been just for a few hours.  I’ve never really had the chance to explore so I decided to plan my own weekend getaway and relax a little.

I chose to stay at 21C Museum Hotel for a variety of reasons; I’ve only heard good things about the boutique hotel chain that started in Louisville and now has six locations throughout the south and midwest.  The Cincinnati location is downtown and and was central to everything I needed: donuts, Panera, the wedding reception, etc.  It also has a CVS right at the corner in case you forget any necessities.

Each hotel has an art museum in the lobby that is open to the public as well as a restaurant and spa.  You can book online or by phone and the staff was amazing.  There are several parking lots very close by, but I chose to utilize the valet; it’s $35 per night and you do have in and out privileges which is really convenient if you want to leave the city and check out some of the shopping, art murals or cross over the river to Northern Kentucky.

So let me show you what the suite looks like!

Polka Dot LuLaRoe Cassie Skirt + Kind Self Thought

June 8, 2016

An April 2017 update! A year later this post about the LuLaRoe Cassie skirt continues to be one of my most popular blog posts; if you’re interested in seeing more LuLaRoe check out the following posts:

  • A lace LuLaRoe Lola Skirt
  • Another polka dot LuLaRoe Cassie Skirt
  • How to wear your black LuLaRoe Leggings for fall
  • Springing forward with the LuLaRoe Madison
  • Valentine’s Day with LuLaRoe Amelia
  • LuLaRoe Valentine’s Day leggings

I will try my best to continue updating this with LuLaRoe posts!

One of my big focuses the past few years has been not only to take better care of myself across the board, but also to work on how I think about myself and talk to myself {surprise — I’m totally one of those crazy people that has full blown conversations with themselves!}

I read this poem about two years ago and it’s something that’s resonated strongly with me ever since.

“I treat myself like I would treat my daughter. I brush her hair, wash her laundry, tuck her in goodnight. Most importantly, I feed her. I do not punish her. I do not berate her, leave tears staining her face. I do not leave her alone. I know she deserves more. I know I deserve more.” — Michelle K.

I don’t write about my struggles with anxiety and depression all that often but the fact is that even now, years after my initial diagnosis, I still struggle day to day with being kind to myself.  Reaching a point where I don’t feel the need to internally berate myself for something small has been a huge milestone for me personally, but perhaps an even bigger success lately has been recognizing things when I’m in situations that are causing me to backslide.  The past couple months have been extremely tough personally, but I’m proud of the way I’ve stuck up for myself and known that my heart and intentions are pure.

So what does that long intro have to do with today’s post? Well aside from the fact that it’s heavy on my heart and mind as I’m writing, it also has a little bit to do with LuLaRoe.  {Disclaimer: this is not a sponsored post!}  My good friend Tracy was my first real introduction to LuLaRoe’s products.  I had previously blown them off; I’m not a leggings kinda gal — I know atrocious right?  One of Tracy’s college friends is a Louisville local and I shopped with her a bit before this post.  While I was shopping with Sue, I was struck by how incredible it is to find a company so focused on empowering women through clothing that includes a wide variety of sizes, shapes and silhouettes. What Nicole Wore: LuLaRoe Cassie Skirt

I entered Sue’s house fully intending to pick something out for my blog post and leave and ended up spending over an hour with her talking about LuLaRoe the company and how powerful inclusive clothing can be and ended up leaving with several purchases for myself and my mom on top of the item for my blog post.  My mom ended up not liking the skirt I picked out for her {ironic, I know}, so I went back last month and swapped it out for this fun polka dot LuLaRoe Cassie skirt for me.What Nicole Wore: LuLaRoe Cassie Skirt

In so many ways, blogging has been my creative outlet beyond work, beyond school, beyond reading and all the other things I enjoy doing to keep myself busy and focused on the good.  I don’t think I realized it at the time, but fashion was something that allowed me to feel good about myself when I wasn’t able to see much good in myself.  And what a blessing it is to be able to understand what the difference in those two is now.

Instagram: Things I Learned During 10k

June 3, 2016

I recently surpassed 10,000 followers on Instagram, something that still seems unfathomable to me, and wanted to dedicate a post to what I’ve learned, what’s worked, what hasn’t worked and why the platform has worked for me.  I wrote a similar post about what I learned during my first year of blogging that you can check out here.

  1. Engagement is everything.

For whatever reason when I first started my fashion Instagram I never interacted with other accounts beyond maybe liking their photos.  When someone “likes” your photo, it is making it so that your post is in the “Explore” tab of all their followers; growth on Instagram has many factors but being able to network out is big.  Responding to comments has been key as well as putting myself out there when I love something about a post.  More recently responding to every single comment has become tougher, just do to the sheer volume.  I try to respond to comments that are questions in a timely manner {usually within 48 hours if at all possible} and leave love on the pages of those that have taken time to comment on my posts.

2.  Be consistent in content delivery.

Another thing that it took me awhile to get the hang of.  I try now to consistently post new content twice a day. I’ve been using Iconosquare for the past nine months or so to pinpoint when I get the highest engagement rate from my audience and take those analytics and go crazy using them to my advantage. I’m able to track exactly when a good posting time is and if I find that a certain time is inconvenient to post at am able to figure out another time.

3.  Post quality content.

Blogging has been super helpful in this aspect as I now have a library of high quality photos to dig through if I’m having a day where taking a photo for Instagram just isn’t happening {see: day off/post leg day}.  We’ve all seen {and taken/posted, let’s be real} photos that are grainy, dark, blurry and otherwise just not our best “work.”  Featuring clear photos is key and leads right into number 4….

4. Change up your feed.

This is probably the most ~controversial tip I’ll give; some people swear by a continued aesthetic, color scheme or angle of photography.  For me, I like when my feed is full of different colors, angles, types of shots, etc.  I try to make sure to mix things up by taking full body shots, close ups of accessories and detail shots, outfit “selfies” from above, using flatlays to show off outfit inspiration or items that are new to me and the occasional mirror selfie.  {Disclaimer: I can’t seem to nail this last one, so it’s featured the least.} Changing up your background and where you take photos can be a big thing too.  I shoot quite a bit at my house but try to make sure I move around and shoot in front of my garage, on the side of my house, on the deck, etc.  Keep things interesting.
5. Tag your brands.

What Nicole Wore: Instagram Tips

Another thing that I never did when I first started a fashion Instagram.  This is the age of social media and everyone {ok not everyone but almost} is on this platform.  When you get ready to post a photo, be sure to hit “Tag People” and tag the brands you’re featuring.  This is an easy way to connect with brands for possible collaborations, be discovered by fellow enthusiasts of your favorite shops and potentially even get featured by the brand.  While I’d love to take credit for being discovered by all my followers (:, it goes without saying that I wouldn’t be at 10,000 without the features I’ve had from brands like Old Navy, Vera Bradley, DressBarn, Francesca’s, Hautelook, etc.

6. Use appropriate hashtags.

This is -Donald Trump voice- huuuuuuuuge.  I always try to use the hashtags that the brands I’m wearing are using as well as a few others {eg. Rebecca Minkoff uses #myRM and ColourPop uses #colourpopme}  Some favorites: #realoutfitgram #bloggerstyle #outfitinspo #styleblogger  I also try to use more specific ones as well {eg. #kentuckyblogger and #blackgirlswhoblog}; these allow brands and social media lovers that are looking for more specific things to find you! You also have a higher chance of coming up as one of the “top posts” which means when people are searching these terms, you’re coming up first.

7. Include your email address in your bio.

What Nicole Wore: Instagram Tips

I have brands discover me through all of the different platforms that I use, but you want to make it as easy as possible for them to contact you.  You can share a little about yourself, your location, what you blog about, your snapchat, etc. but be sure to include the email address so that you’re easily accessible to brands as well as fellow bloggers and followers.

White Caged Bikini

May 25, 2016

Memorial Day weekend is upon us and that means its time to unpack all your whites {if you’re someone that puts them away every Labor Day}, fire up the grill and bring out the swimsuits!

I snagged this suit about a month ago, the top is available in four different solid colors, two colorblock options and one fun print.  I wanted to find a strappy top that wouldn’t make my chest completely disappear so this top was a good compromise for me, plus the price was great.

I really bought this bikini top for the front, but the strappy back is fun but also functional — something I always worry about with bikinis.  When picking out bottoms, I tend to go for pieces that provide more coverage for the booty; I liked that with picking a solid top I was able to look through all the various bikini bottom options VS had and find one that I really liked and felt comfortable with.  This bottom has strappy, braided sides, but is not the “cheeky” bottom that haunts my ‘why didn’t I go to the gym sooner’ nightmares.

I brought tons of towels to the beach with me and ended sticking with this tasseled beach towel almost the whole trip.  I’m also a big fan of how long Vera Bradley’s beach towels are; I’m not sure if my mom just made me use my little kid towels for too long, but my late childhood pool memories always include my ankles and head not fitting on.  This towel really can be spread out and would be perfect to throw over the seat on your boat or for having a picnic on.

What Nicole Wore: White Caged Bikini

I’ve talked up these tortoise frames a few times since I snagged them from DITTO, but I’m having the hardest time thinking about sending them back.  They go with everything, are oversized without being too big and I love how they fit on my face.  I’m not usually a designer sunglass person, because I have a track record that includes losing sunglasses in the bottom of my purse and crushing them when I forget that I left them sitting in the seat of my car, but my DITTO subscription has been a great way to try different shapes, colors and sizes without financially committing.  So far the Karen Walker and Ray Ban shades I’ve tried have been my favorites.

What Nicole Wore: White Caged Bikini

Of course, with the ‘sun’s out, guns out’ mentality, I had to be sure to get sunscreen from my beach bag and wear my DIY beach hat for added sun protection.  Summer’s my favorite season and I’m thrilled to be able to bring out all my pool floats again {saw the CUTEST pizza slice + ice cream cone at FiveBelow on Monday but resisted…for now.}

What are your Memorial Day weekend plans?

What To Do On a Day Trip to Miami

May 23, 2016

Last week’s vacation was some of the best unwinding I’ve done in a while.  During my last day in Florida we headed to Miami for a few hours.  Per my request, we visited the Wynwood Walls and we also went by and checked out Vizcaya {where I seemed to take a lot less photos #oops}.  I’m sharing some of my favorite photos below!

I’d seen the wall murals at Wynwood in numerous blog posts and knew that if we went to Miami, I wanted to be able to experience them in person.  My love for bright colors and pattern shows a lot in my personal style and also translates to what I appreciate in art.  Taking in all of the different murals, which were all so unique, was something I really loved {and so did the crew for the day #phew!}

This was the last building we went to during our stroll around the wall art, but my dad must have asked me three different times if we were going to come back to this one. I love the varying stripes and the optical illusion it creates — across from this building are several buildings, including one that was painted to look like marble! #Swoon

I practically sprinted across the street to get to this mural; I love the bright colors and kaleidoscope effect of this painting.

After Wynwood, we stopped to eat lunch at La Camaronera, a restaurant that was featured on Food Network, and it was delicious.  Admittedly, I was mildly concerned when I saw patrons walking in with their own six packs, but the food more than made up for it.

Then we headed to Villa Vizcaya.  The estate sits on the Biscayne Bay and is beautiful.

Inside the house, there is a strict ‘no pictures’ policy, but the outside was much prettier, in my opinion.  The back gardens were very intricate and maze-like with several smaller gardens split off on the sides.  Surprisingly, I didn’t get any bug bites while wandering outside. I did get to see a few different lizards, including a gorgeous male with an orange head.  The male lizards kept doing push ups to impress the lady lizards, but I was entranced as well.
