How to Look Like a Natural at Kentucky’s Biggest Event

April 12, 2019

Hope you’re not tired of Kentucky Derby looks! Today I’m sharing what might be my favorite race track look this year.  Let’s be serious — Derby and Oaks are Kentucky’s biggest event.  I’m a big believer that it’s worse to be underdressed than overdressed.  If you share that fear, this breakdown is for you!

How to Look Like a Natural at Kentucky’s Biggest Event | The Bigger the Hat the Better

Less may be more in some circumstances, but not for Derby.  Have you always dreamed of wearing a flying saucer that’s bedazzled and has a cluster of fruit?  This is the time to go for it.  With the Derby being Kentucky’s biggest event, anything goes.  Mix prints, wear an over the top hat or fascinator, pull out the jewelry that you’d normally deem over the top.  Being extra is a -good- thing.  So don’t be afraid of dramatic makeup, bold colors, or anything that makes you shine!

Derby is pretty much an invitation to dress over the top. Click To Tweet

How to Look Like a Natural at Kentucky’s Biggest Event | Wear (Or Bring) Comfortable Shoes

If you’ll be watching Derby from a box, you’ll have somewhere to sit, but if you’re going to be in the bleachers or infield: bring shoes.  Without fail, every time I’m at Churchill Downs I see women barefoot and while I don’t fault them because I hate when my feet hurt…it’s not the most sanitary of conditions.  Here I opted for a low block heel from Steve Madden that’s incredibly comfortable.  This dusty blue color is one I think I’ll be able to wear into summer and they also come in a leopard that I have my eye on.

How to Look Like a Natural at Kentucky’s Biggest Event | My Look

It was love at first sight with this floral Adrianna Papell dress; the dramatic fit and flare and blue flowers got me.  I knew this would be the PERFECT Derby dress and I absolutely love how the entire look came together.  This hatinator (what we call a fascinator and hat combo) is on a headband.  The oversized and angled look caught my eye and the floral vine across the front felt like SUCH a good tie in to the floral print of the dress.

How to Look Like a Natural at Kentucky’s Biggest Event | Don’t Be Afraid of Statement Pieces

Like I mentioned before, Derby is 100% a special occasion so don’t feel like you have to shy away from statement pieces.  While the flare on this dress is probably a little more than I’d wear to run to the grocery store; it’s a dress that will fit right in and get compliments at the track.
