As Seen on Instagram: What I Wore

June 20, 2015

Eeeeek can’t believe June is almost over…This year is going by way too fast.

brooks brothers shirt {last seen here} + hm dress worn as skirt {sold out, similar | last seen here} + watch {similar, on sale}

This shirt was actually part of an old work uniform. At the time, I hated it mostly because of how often I had to wear it, but now it is a staple for sure. I have so many button ups (don’t ask, I won’t tell) that this one doesn’t get overworked but it is a go to. White always looks crisp, when properly cared for, and I love that this shirt makes my outfits look a little more professional. I feel like that last statement means I’m becoming an old woman…..

I lurveeeeeee my pineapple dress; it’s sold out now so I linked a similar option from Maison Jules, one of my fave brands carried at Macy’s.  While I love this dress, I admittedly am not crazy about how it looks as a dress – sounds weird right? I do love wearing it as a peplum or a skirt which is why I bought the dress option and not the top from H&M. Versatility, people!

Nicole’s Soup for the Soul: 6.17.15

June 17, 2015

Here are my favorite reads recently!

Letter for Lauren: June Shape Up from Lauren Conrad.com

A lot of people are over being politically correct all the time, but Lauren and her staff have made the decision to stop using “skinny” to describe the goal of working out.

“Starting this month, we’ll be banning any body shaming terms from the site, and replacing them with words like “fit” “toned,” and “healthy.” We try do to this for the most part anyway, but now we’re making it official! The word skinny will now be reserved for skinny jeans. My editorial team and I had a long talk about it, and we want to make sure that the focus is on being fit as opposed to a number on the scale. Every body is created differently—and healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes.”

Lauren is such a big source of lifestyle inspiration to so many people that I know; having her point out that no body is created equal and that working out shouldn’t be about getting slim is going to be huge for so many people.

10 Tips for Mastering Instagram by Krista Robertson

I’ve read Krista’s blog for a hot minute (anyone else remember when she was Southern Shopaholic?). She’s expanded so much and really come into her own which has been so crazy fun to watch. Krista’s tips are all worthy of a read but this one really spoke to me.

“This may seem like a no brainer, but you’d be surprised. I know I’ve been guilty of this and I’m hoping I’m not alone. There are days when I just don’t have anything to post. To make sure I don’t have radio silence online I’ll just throw up a shot that I know is just okay and not really all that great. Well, when you know it’s not that great, your readers do too. You’ll get some unfollows, not as many likes and very little engagement. Now who wants that?”

Having readers that are engaged is the biggest thing for me; what fun is Instagram if you’re just talking to yourself? Publishing content that you’re proud of and can speak on is important across the board.

Why We Hold Onto Anger and Resentment by Megan Wyatt

I can hold onto a grudge for years. Seriously. If it were a skill I could list on my resume that would be great.

“By holding on, you might still be searching for closure, and needing an apology from someone, again, or for the first time. You want to arrive at the moment with all the baggage in hand, to make sure they understand all the weight you have been carrying around. Seeking validation for your suffering, acknowledgment, and to be reassured, yes, indeed, you really were hurt.”

Letting go of past wrongs and mistakes is something I have to constantly be mindful of working on; it’s just my personality. Megan talks about break ups and friendships ending and I seriously was sitting in front of my laptop like, “YIKES THIS IS ME!” The truth is, I’m 100% a sensitive soul. You know that time you joked about me taking forever to get through school? My feelings were hurt. When you talked about me posting on Instagram too much? Still think about it today. When you were planning your wedding and couldn’t take my calls or texts for two months? I’m still not over it.

I’m a vengeful little thing but I’m trying really hard to be better about it.

GAP closing a quarter of its stores by Ashley Lutz of Business Insider

Okay, probably not as interesting to other peeps, but working retail makes me interested in what’s going on in the retail world.

“Big apparel brands are grappling with shoppers who increasingly want deeply discounted clothes over classic logos and status.

As Americans shell out for items like iPhones and Netflix, they are increasingly unwilling to pay full price for sweaters and jeans.”

The nature of retail is changing so quickly with e-commerce taking off and the increase in sales at outlet centers. Even more interesting, some companies are really pursuing factory and outlet sales by increasing the number of factory stores and even going beyond; Express has raised eyebrows and attention from competitors by placing several Express Factory stores in full-line malls.

What news articles have had your attention recently?

As Seen on Instagram: What I Wore

June 12, 2015

striped shirt with faux leather pocket via sam’s club {similar here, here (on sale) and here (on sale) | last seen here} + old navy polka dot shorts {old, love these ON shorts} + sandals via kohl’s {old, similar} + kate spade new york purse {thrifted, similar | last seen here} + ashiana london necklace c/o rocksbox
I was so tired on Monday. I really had zero motivation to get dressed but eventually decided on my go to striped tee with my super old green polka dot Old Navy shorts. My necklace is from my most recent Rocksbox set; you can sign up and receive your first month free of charge with code: whatnicoleworexoxo.

old navy bird print sleeveless blouse {old, similar} + target style skirt {thrifted NWT, similar | last seen here}

I’m feeling kind of weird about sleeveless things now that I’m allowed to wear them at work. It’s been a true sauna like experience in Kentucky recently. It’s been more of a minimal clothing vibe lately. But, I feel like I really need to work on toning my arms a little more to be 100 percent comfortable with “suns out, guns out.”

forever21 striped boatneck shirt {old, similar | last seen here} + tommy hilfiger dachshund embroidered shorts {thrifted, similar}

I found these shorts at Goodwill and always get so many, “where did you find them?”‘s when I wear them. I’m sad to report after much searching I haven’t found anything similar out there. Sigh. I know.

I like how these shorts look paired with a white tee, but chose to go with the red stripes for something a little more daring. Also, I’m very sad to report that…my shorts are suddenly all becoming too big. Society says we should be happy when we lose weight, but I am just really sad at the thought of my clothes not fitting.

ann taylor colorblock button down {thrifted, loving this colorblock popover (on sale)} + tassel necklace c/o purple peridot + gap factory skinny belt {similar} + roz and ALI black jeans {last seen here} + clarks usa flats {similar (on sale) | last seen here}
While I was in Chi last weekend, I got to meet up with tons of fashionistas and also some major thriftinistas! I left inspired and ready to hit the ‘Will when I got back. I had some time on Wednesday so after getting my car washed I walked into my closest Goodwill. I was super excited that it had been reorganized! Everything is sorted by size finally #yaaaaassssssss

I snagged this shirt and wasn’t sure about it on the hanger, but loved the colors. Once I got to the dressing room and tried it on I was in love! It’s super cute tucked in or left loose and I’m already thinking about all the fun things I can pair it with.

bracelets all from francesca’s collection  {center, left and right sold out online} (all fran jewelry is buy one get the second half off right now)
Guys. This turquoise bracelet on the right. Please. Plus it’s only $12, holla! Still loving all things druzy and this arm party just felt like it belonged with this shirt.

sneakers + cropped leggings {full length (on sale), crops in different color}
I had the hardest workout this week. It was very yikes but I ended up putting in an extra fifteen minutes and felt great at the end. I desperately wanted to take the next day off (especially after eating a burrito bowl at Chipotle), but felt bad about making excuses.

Lately, I’ve started noticing little differences in my body — more energy, better mood, a trimmer waist, little muscles starting to form on my arms and thighs. It’s not necessarily about losing weight for me, but feeling good about myself and getting into better shape.

xo, Nicole

Where Nicole Went: Chicago

June 9, 2015

This past weekend I went up to Chicago to meet and have lunch with some of my fave ladies from Instagram as well as visit my friend Michelle.

I had gone back and forth on flying and driving for awhile. The drive from Louisville to Chicago really isn’t too bad, but the last time I had visited my car got towed. I wasn’t all that mad about it, but more about the fact that the whole fiasco took a couple hours to sort out and by the time I finally got back to Louisville it was after 1 am.

This was the first time I’d ever taken Megabus and I was going by myself so it’s safe to say that the travel anxiety was 100% real.

We did take a half hour break in Memphis, IN (about 20 minutes north of Louisville) and I used the opportunity to snag all of my favorite snacks. After eight hours, I was finally in Chicago!

I was thrilled to be off the bus and able to stretch my legs. They unloaded all of our luggage, but once I snagged my bag I took off towards Union Station. The walk was about a block, so really not bad at all.

As Seen on Instagram: What I Wore

June 7, 2015

Weeee wooo! I’m home from Chicago (woof what a weekend) and happy to be settling in to watch some basketball tonight!

I’ll be talking all about my adventures in Chicago, including the IG meet up, on this week’s Travel Tuesday post.

necklace c/o siramara + j crew broken in boyfriend chino shorts {thrifted, sold out, similar – some colors on sale | last seen here} + kate spade new york purse {thrifted, similar | last seen here} + forever 21 blouse {old}

As I was running around Louisville to buy sunglasses for the trip and some last minute additions to a hostess gift for Michelle, I really went for comfort. It was 85 this day (kill me) so I opted for a lightweight blouse and my chino shorts.

I’m head over heels for this new necklace from Siramara. I really love the stone in the middle with the spikes.
